"PANIKON DEIMA"

Twenty four by forty eight inches
Oil on prepared wood panel

A very, very personal piece for me, an exploration of a concept that has resurfaced in my imagination for years.
The title has meaning, though far be it from me to let you in on it: you'll have to explore it on your own.
These days I find I'm returning to my old habit of a very tight underpainting…
I'm finding that the tonal qualities of underpainting to be of value, (no pun intended) in shaping the finished product… I find a renewed interest in "long" paint.
The textures and flow in and of it's self can be nearly hypnotic. I've been documenting the progress nearly daily, and will be posting as much of the results as often as I can… for those of you with an interest in this sort of thing.

Here's where I stand now, head full of dream noise
and somewhat lost to the world as this piece begins to grow and speak.....
What you see is the finished, or near finished initial work that I'll build my painting on.
In many ways I've found the raw underpainting much in common
with Bill Nelson's released demos...
The scaffolding itself has a charm that I enjoy, though I feel it's the rare person that would actually want to hang this stage in their home.
After all evolution is the nature of lucid dreaming.
When it starts to talk, if I'm doing my job, I'll listen closely and respond to our mutual needs. The subtle depth of field in this window I'm making is a bit odd...intentionally, though it plays havoc with my senses while working. Very disorientating to say the least.

Big changes in store........ if you're at all interested, keep watch.

Much love,
Z.

Ok...this is about halfway. Roughly.
If it matters, and I'm not being redundant, I usually glaze body color
and work into the wet glaze with various densities of color,
adjusting lights and darks as I go.
At this point I normally find keys to the finished piece.

Often my initial color scheme undergoes re-thinking.
The imbalance you see here is due to my transitioning from one idea to,
(hopefully) a complimentary one.

Yes, I get really frazzled quite often.....
a conversation this intense with my muse usually means she wins.
The way of the world it seems....... and generally a good thing.

Ego? Pshaw!....... How can anyone face there own
mortality on this level day in and day out and even HAVE
one?

Next painting please.
M.Z.
